Peppermint Green Coffee House will surprise you
Peppermint Green Coffee House surprised me the moment that I stepped into it a couple of weeks ago in December 2015 for a business network get-together. I am clearly not the only one that believes this place has more to offer than what immediately meets the eye. Just Friday past, I was taking some time out on their couch, and a group of mums, who had just finished their Pilates class, came in for a cuppa and chinwag.
One of the group exclaimed, “This place is awesome! I did not know there was so much space!” Her friends immediately responded by explaining that they regularly come here for a cuppa, and I think she made the same mental note I did, “Oh man! I’ve found a gem!”
Speaking of gems, I met up with Crystal Green, the owner, to find out more about this shop of hers with this quirky atmosphere.
The idea started out as an up-cycled furniture shop
Crystal told me that the coffee shop was initially going to be a furniture shop where she would sell up-cycled furniture that she enjoys giving a new lease of life with chalk paint, but then considered combining her love of coffee and home baking also. She contacted Peter Barile, owner of Big Brew in Wangara, for some advice. He invited her to come and gain experience from him and the team at Big Brew between September 2014 and February 2015 and in Crystal’s words she couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Crystal explains “Finding a good supplier is crucial. Not only does the coffee have to be on point but the relationship is also extremely important.”
Peppermint Green serve Big Brews Voodoo Brew blend and it certainly is “on point”.
The treats at Peppermint Green Coffee House
The treats on display are equally yummy. From the delicious raw balls and slices, supplied by Rawgasm (the Super Mint Fudge slice – Oh my word!, this is a must try!) to the fresh baked goods from the Bread Expert in Joondalup. Everything else is made on premises and the team is currently busy updating the menu. I love the look of their kid’s plate and please do not forget to try their very popular Gluten Free Savoury Muffin!
A coffee house with HeART
After many enquiries about the eye-catching artwork on the wall, Crystal decided that these should also be for sale. Shortly, she will also stock scented candles from local small business, Tila Candle Company. The Minion Rocks, that her nephew painted, were such a hit that his first batch sold out on the first day! One of the team, Angela Murray, is also a T-shirt designer and has her own company DelveR Clothing. DelveR tee’s hang in the shop entrance and these are also available to buy.
During the time that I spent with Crystal, it was obvious that she does not take all the credit for the hard work that has gone into opening Peppermint Green Coffee House. She quickly pointed out that it was, and continues to be, a team effort. From her sister and brother-in-law whose company, Smart Fix Property Services, who renovated the shop from an old Avis car hire office into the industrial-feel homely space that it is now, to Angela, her friend and employee, whom she serendipitously met at a BBQ after losing contact in Aberdeen, Scotland where they both attended the same art school. Crystal informed me that her husband, Paul, works in the shop on Saturdays, as well as having a full-time job in the city and his continuous support has allowed her to pursue her dream.
What I also like about Crystal is her interest in helping others. Peppermint Green was involved in the Operation Blue Santa project in December. The coffee house hosted the launch of the project, organised by WA Police, and happily became a collection point for donated gifts for less fortunate children in women’s refuges over WA.
I tell everyone I meet about Peppermint Green. How can I keep such a good thing to myself? The staff are friendly, their food is scrumptious and they want you to sit and have some time to yourself.
“I want people to relax and enjoy their time here.”
They even have adult colouring books. Crystal says, “I love it when people sit and chat to each other. I want people to relax and enjoy their time here.”
Peppermint Green Coffee House really is a breath of fresh air, as its name suggests.
They are open 7 am – 3 pm, Monday to Friday, and 9 am – 3 pm on Saturdays. They are situated at 17/7 Delage Street, Joondalup, north of the river in Perth.
